Week 5_ Article #2_ Crime in Atlanta

Teen feared kidnapped is safe

I didn't know Atlanta is such a dangerous city. I mean people used to tell me "Oh , Atlanta is such a dangerous place." But I didn't realized it well. But when I check local news, I was surprised by lots of crime news. Regardless of website, there are lots of crime news from kidnapp to homocide. I can't believe there are so many crimes just in Atlanta. I really should becareful and aware of pissble danger because Gergia Tech is right in the middle of Atalnat. I just read the article about the safety of pedestirans in GT. I hope people find better solution before GT covers newspaper.

1 comment: from the article "Dunwoody Dog Park" from Roger's blog

  1. I think the Atlanta government is right. Dogs are actuallly killing trees. I went to Piedmont park for two Sundays. There is one big dog park for large sized dogs. The smell from the dog park was aweful and there were no trees or grasses around there. And me and my friend had allergy after we left the park. I don't have any allergy to any animals. But somehow I had difficulties breathing.
So, i think governemt is right. Maybe trees look okay now but after five years later, most of the trees in Dunwoody dogpark can be damaged. Besides that park is famous for the unique trees. So government should move dogpark.

Week 5 _Article #1_ Lighting, Landscaping Themes of Annual Safety Walk

Lighting, Landscaping Themes of Annual Safety walk

I think it is very good idea that president, staff faculties and students and Gerogia Tech police are all walked around campus together and discussed about safety walk in Goergia Tech campus. But to me, it is not practical enough to prevent future crime . According to the article, they discuss about lighting on the streets. Of course lighting is important, but making street more brighter is not going to decrease crimesignificantly. I think more important thing is emergency button. when crime happens, people would use emergency button more than their cell phones. Howeber, many people say emergency button is useless because police comes too late. I believe more emergency button and faster response would be better for preventing future crimes.

Week 4 _ Movie Review

Before Sunrise

Han Byul Song

Unlike typical romantic comedy movies that are full of ridiculous coincidences and predictable happy ending, “Before Sunrise” is a unique romance movie. Ethan Hawke plays an American student Jesse who travels Europe by train, Julie Delpy plays Celine, student of Sorbonne University in France, in the movie.

The movie starts with Jesse and Celine meet on the train in 1995. Jesse is on his way to catch a flight to America tomorrow and Celine is on her way to go back to her school in France. On the train, they talk about themselves and both feel something special to each other. Jesse asks Celine to spend a day with him until he catch the plane. Celine hesitates for a second but decides to spend one night with him in Vienne, Austria. Celine and Jesse walk around Vienne and talk about their love, lives, dead, and dreams. As the night settles in, their emotions to each other grow deeper and stronger. But they both know that they should go back to their lives when the sunrise.

The reason I said this movie is special is because of its reality. While I watch this movie, I thought this might actually happen in real life. Costumes of this movie are very good because costumes make Jesse and Celine look like real people whom I see in the street every day. Usually, in the movie, actors wear fancy, pretty designer clothes which make viewers separate themselves from the screens. But Jesse wears one pair of jeans and jacket, Celine wears simple dress and t-shirt entire movie. And that actually make viewers more concentrate and focus on the movie.

“Before Sunrise” is focus on scenes that catch sensitive emotion rather than beautiful and spectacular visual scenes. There is one scene that Jesse and Celine get in to the music box. They sit next to each other and listen to the music together. When Jesse looks at Celine, she pretends looking at somewhere else, and when Celine looks back at Jesse, he is looking at something else. They keep repeating this, and by the time music ends, they look at each other for a second and get out of the music box. This scene describes their sensitive emotional tension without any script or explanation.

I recommend this movie to people who are sick of obvious romantic comedy movies. “Before Sunrise” is my favorite movie, and I watch it over and over again. Every time I watch this movie, I found something new from their conversation, place and background music. Furthermore, the ending of this movie makes me like it even more. Good news is there are sequels: “Before sunset” and “Before midnight”. So if you don’t have anything to do this weekend, I insist you to start “Before Sunrise”, I am pretty sure after you watch this movie, your mind will be full of happiness and love!

Exploring Public Perceptions of Future Wearable Computing

Assicitation

The concept of wearable electronic device is familiar to many people. Earlier, I heard that watch type cell phone was invented. As a person who is still not familiar with smart phone, that news didn't please me. But I remember that some of my " Tech Snob" friends were so excited about this futuristic new device.
As the article mentioned, where people display portable computers on their bodies is quite important. Wrong place can make awkward situations. Once, I was in the subway, and I happend to sit next to a guy who looks like homeless. As soon as I finished my phone call with my friend, the guy started talk to me. He kept saying "What? What did you just said?" in a loud voice. He seems pretty mad at me. I was paniced and thinkg about every single words I said to my friend over my phone. The guy kept saying non-sence words looking at me. And I was looking at him too with my terrified "please let me go" eyes. I just stood up and looking for other seat. And when I sat across him, I saw he was wearing bluetooth on his other side of ear. I realize he was talking to somebody through bluetooth and he looked at me because I looked at him first. I was so embarrased  but at the same time, I couldn't stop giggling. So, I thinkg it is very important to choose proper location to put your wearable computer in order to prevent such an embarrasing situation!!

WREK Radio series highlights students leadership on campus

WREK Radio Series Highlights Student Leadership on Campus

Assiciation

This article is about Georgia Tech radio channel WREK. WREK is interviewing leaders on campus in order to tell what is it like to become a leader in the group. WREK also want to inform students that there are plenty of opportunities that people do not aware of.

I think what WREK is doing is very effective. When I was in my university in Korea, some of my friends are doing group work, involved in events. But some including me don't really know where they got the information. But the radio channel in my school started to tell all the events during lunch hour. I could hear radio everywhere in the campus. And it helped me a lot to know what is going on. It turns out there are lots of activities that I can join easily. And I think WREK is doing similar thing. But I want to recommend WREK, set an hour everyday.

CNN Poll: GOP & tea party unfavorables at all-time highs

CNN Poll: GOP & tea party unfavorables at all-time highs

Surprise

This article shows that many Americans are unfavor of Republicans after few weeks of government shut down. When Roger, the teacher of my current event class, explained briefly about the tea party shutting down the government and unfortunate news, Georgia is one of the pro-tea party states, I was very surprised. I couldn't  believe that politicians, normally educated and intelligent people, just decieded to shut down the government because they are not happy with new bill even though the bill was already passed court. Furthermore, I wanted to deny that I am living in one of the cities that advocate these unreasonable politicians. However, this article comfort me a little bit.
According to the article, 64% of Americans are unfavor of Republican party which is the highest point since the poll done by CNN in 1992. Experts assume that this rate is highly related to recent government shut down. What surprises me is that Americans who I think do not change their political belief easily  changed their view so rapidly within 16 days of shut down. I carefully assume that it is becasue the government shut down directly affect people's lives. I mean many people may not take care of their important papers, and experience inconvenienct situations. But I wish Americans changed their mind due to the same reason as I am: Can not believe those few politicians just shutted down entire government.
Also, 43% of Americans are favor of Democratics which is almost same rate as before the government shut down. This surprised me a little bit too because I though people would be more favor of Democratic. But I guess that the increased number of people who dislike Republicans doesn't mean increased number of poeple who like Democratic.

Atlanta haunts and Halloween attractions

I have read an article "Atlanta haunts and Halloween attractions" from atlantaaccess.com. This article introduces us about "fascinating" Halloween attractions with specific dates or admission fees. As a person who greatly enjoys such events, I summarized few attractions from the article here to recommend. I always thought that Halloween evnets are for children. But it also can be a good chance to experience American culture. One of my frineds recommand me the Netherworld Haunted House. She says that this house is the most popular haunted house in Atlanta. Because it is really realistic and creative. I want to visit Netherland house with my class mates

ELEVATE ATLANTA

ELEVATE ATLANTA : Reclaiming community through the art

Bringing cultural experience close to people is important. Like author mentioned, city that doesn't celebrate art has no community sprtit, nor familiar atmosphere. Abandant cultural events help gathering citizens together and creating rich leisure time. In addition, such positive community atmosphere creates more and more cultural experiences. Major of Atlanta also said that such cultural programs help comminities together and enhance vision of bussiness in Atlatna.
I have been living in Atlanta for 8 months, and I personally think there are various culturual events are going on. For example, there was gay parade, art exibition in Marietta square, book affair near Emory university and taste of Atlanta this week. But most of the time, I didn't know such events were happening. I heard from some friends who went there or I incidently saw the events while I drive. I admit that I have not checked website, but I wish the hosts of events promote and publicize such wonderful events more efficiently so that more poeple would aware of events and enjoy!

Taste of Atlanta turns twelve

Taste of Atlanta turns twelve
Events Taste of Atlanta turns twelve
TOA.jpg

For the twelfth year running, Taste of Atlanta will be held in Midtown's Tech Square Friday, October 25 to Sunday, October 27, serving up another year's worth of celebrity chef sightings, local ingredient-citing, and enough exciting moments in eating to remind you why you love getting out in this city.
Friday's opening event, Atlanta's Taste Revival, finds host Ron Eyester (most recently of Timone's Pizza) presiding over a musically influenced block party with participating chefs such as Shaun Doty of Bantam & Biddy, Kevin Gillespie of Gunshow, Keith Schroeder of High Road Craft, and more. As you listen to Southern rock from Parker Smith and the Bandwith, munch on dishes such as hot chicken drumsticks inspired by Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" from Doty, a self-described '"Trans Am" kind of guy.
The main festivities on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 (11 a.m - 6 p.m.) include samples from more than 90 area restaurants, ranging from tried-and-true favorites like JCT Kitchen, Desta, and Fox Bros., to newbies like Chai Pani and King + Duke.
After you've had your fill of food, there's room for alternative forms of fun: Fernet Branca's Barcraft Competition crowns Atlanta's Best Bartender; Atlanta Eats' Mara Davis hosts the Big Green Egg Grilling Experience (RIP Radio Free Lunch); CNN's Holly Firfer presents cooking classes and seminars; and the Family Food Zone features the cutest, most cutthroat little Iron Chef Kids Competition.
General admission tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at the gate (includes 10 taste coupons); free for kids under 13 (excludes taste coupons). VIP tickets are $75 in advance and $85 at the gate, (includes 10 taste coupons and access to the Wine+Beer+Cocktail Experience of over 50 wines, 30 craft beers, and 10 cocktail tastings). Here's where budgeting skills come in: taste coupons are used to "purchase" menu items valued at one, two or three taste coupons, so be sure not to blow all your tickets at one stall (but if you do, additional coupons are $1 each).
So eat something, drink something, learn something, and get to be a part of the thriving food culture that helps give this town such a hospitable reputation - it's more than just the y'alls, y'all.

I didn't know there are so many cultural events in Atlanta. I simply googled atlanta culture and I got lots of information.
I want to tell friends that there will be  Taste of Atlanta at Tech Square this Friday to Sunday!
Let's all enjoy our delicious food
